Over the years media has always had an impact on the way people think. Whether it is through your local newspaper, the news, or a social media platform, you are influenced daily by the media. Although sometimes it can be beneficial, it can also lead to multiple issues.
This idea is referred to as media ownership, which is when few organizations have control over the increasing shares of the media. The most known organizations are Walt Disney, FOX, Comcast, and AT&T. The companies are known as conglomerates. Conglomerates are some of the most powerful companies do to media ownership. One way conglomerates have an influence is through film production. This can be an issue because independent film makers can keep up with these massive companies and eventually die off. Since these conglomerates have more money have can advertise more, get more movie deals, and invest in new technology, which ultimately doesn't give independent film makers any chances to succeed. The lack of competition can also allow them to significantly inflate their prices. This causes movie theaters to pay more, which leads to them charging you more! Another issue with media ownership involves the news portion of media, such as newspapers, magazines, and news networks. This issue stems from the fact that conglomerates control how society views EVERYTHING. As stated in the first video clip, media gives text meaning by using a certain font or lighting in order for the audience to feel a certain way about it. The reason this in an issue in news is because the media outlet can determine how you feel about an important subject, such as politics. For example, FOX News tends to portray republicans as the elite and honest party, while CNN does the same for democrats. This completely distorted the facts which can be very dangerous to a society. Overall, Conglomerates hold too much power through media ownership. Although giving text a meaning can be very useful in films and novels, it has no place in important real life topics. Also media ownership in film causes the death of independent film companies and an increase in prices. Therefore, media ownership is not all good and can result in some big issues.
